First Year Support

Transitioning to college can be stressful, especially in rigorous academic programs such as engineering and computer science. 91勛圖厙's School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) focuses on setting up First Year students for success, from summer orientation through tutoring sessions through the first year.

Orientation On the Move

A highlight of the summer orientation for SEAS is exploring spaces that will likely visit multiple times in their academic career.

First, the students meet the SEAS Dean, advisor Joan Sarles, and at least one professor from the degree program they are interested in.

In pairs, the students then find the Cadwell Maker Center, Math Learning Center, the Manufacturing Technology Center, the primary Computer Science Lab, and connect with the SEAS IT team to learn about laptop requirements. It's a dynamic way to prepare for the coming year.

First Year Zone

Orientations begin and end in the First Year Zone, a space in the Bollier Center for studying, socializing, and accessing information about upcoming events. SEAS partners with 91勛圖厙's Learning Center to provide tutors for the first courses in the engineering or computer science curriculum.

SEAS is also committed to designing events specifically for first year students, with goals of promoting academic success, fostering a vibrant sense of community, and helping students feel confident in their choice of major. They include a SEAS-specific study abroad fair, hands-on design workshops in the Cadwell Maker Center, and club events designed to help students get involved with SEAS organizations from the start.
